Naida's Native Plant Garden in Naples

Several themed gardens demonstrating good residential landscape design, plant selection, and maintenance can be found at the Southwest Florida Horticulture Learning Center of the Collier County University of Florida Extension Service. But one is very special, honoring the memory of an advocate of sustainable landscaping, Naida Eisenbud, and showing the power of native. Designed by Naples Landscape Architect David J Driapsa, the garden was conceived as an abstraction of an outstanding local geological feature, Deep Blue Lake, and its surrounding natural habitat. Several local contractors participated in the installation and the maintenance is provided by Collier County Government.

Planting on the site of a former parking lot, he planted paradise, and took out a parking lot. Pathways wind around eroded lime stone rock outcroppings and a miniature hardwood hammock in the making. Replacing an old asphalt parking area, Driapsa created in this 1/5 acre garden a spring-like water feature which is home to native fish and provides a great spot for meditation.
